Parent Involvement

At Thirty-fifth Street School, we value our parents and families as significant supporters of a child’s education. We realize that parents are the first educators in a child’s life, teaching them daily tasks and encouraging an interest in learning long before children attend school. Therefore, we recognize family involvement as essential for positive student growth and success.

School Governance Council

Parents are invited to serve on Thirty-fifth Street’s School Governance Council. The Governance Council meets monthly to discuss school business and improve school policies.

Communication

Our school newsletter, Eagle Express, is sent home at the beginning of every month. It highlights important events and program updates. Also, Tuesday folders are sent home weekly. They feature information regarding school business. Parents of students in grades 1-8 receive quarterly progress reports and are encouraged to attend parent/teacher conferences once each semester. Thirty-fifth Street’s open door policy affords parents the opportunity to visit our school whenever necessary. We welcome parents to visit our staff and discuss their child’s progress whenever the need may arise. Staff members and administration collaborate with parents in the development of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students with disabilities. They also cooperate with parents and families to address the needs of all regular education students.

Activities

Thirty-fifth Street’s Parent Coordinator is responsible for organizing a variety of activities in which parents are encouraged to participate. These activities help parents maintain ties with the school and ensure they remain catalysts in their child’s educational progress. Some of these family-oriented activities include:

Parent Training Nights: These sessions are scheduled periodically. Parents are sent an invitation to attend our Parent Training Nights, which focus on assisting children in reading, writing, math and other subjects at home.

Annual Open House: Each fall, parents are invited to attend our Annual Open House. Details regarding our school curriculum and Educational Plan are shared.

Parent Health and Nutrition Night: Held twice a year, Parent Health and Nutrition Nights offer valuable resources for families. Community members and health partners visit Thirty-fifth Street to share their expertise and offer advice on staying healthy.

Donuts for Dads and Muffins for Moms: Parents are invited to visit Thirty-fifth Street and share a breakfast with their child during these special mornings.

Holiday Program: Our annual Holiday Program celebrates the upcoming festivities through the integration of fine arts activities with many different cultures.

African-American History Program: This program provides students with opportunities to engage in activities focused on famous African-Americans.

Math Family Game Night: This special night gives families an opportunity to have fun while learning.

Reading Night: Reading Night reminds families of the importance of literacy. These events include hands-on activities and provide participants with opportunities to read together.
