Special Education

68th Street School embraces children with Special Education needs and uses inclusive teaching strategies in the classroom to the fullest extent possible. Resource services are offered as needed, including Speech/Language services. 68th Street School's inclusive approach to education means that teachers adjust instructional approaches to meet the needs of all diverse learners. It is our hope that by identifying the needs of children at a young age, many students will overcome challenges they face in their earliest years.

The qualified professionals at 68th Street School ensure that each student's unique needs are recognized as outlined in the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). Two certified Special Education Teachers, a Speech Pathologist, an Occupational Therapist, a Physical Therapist and two paraprofessionals comprise the Special Education team. The services of a Handicapped Children's Assistant are also available if needed. Once a week, a social worker, psychologist, diagnostic teacher and Special Education supervisor are in the building to support 68th Street School's inclusive approach to education. A nurse is available as student health needs dictate. Together, these dedicated staff members work to support children with emotional, behavioral and medical challenges.

Problem Solving

68th Street School targets students’ areas of need by addressing the school curriculum in general and by specifically assessing the level of the individual student in need. School staff members are trained to implement interventions and instructional strategies proven effective by research in a variety of areas. These areas include the development of positive school climate, professional staff development, increasing parent support and partnerships for student success. OSPS (Optimizing Success through Problem Solving) is a data-based decision making model that emphasizes collaboration and partnership among teachers, assistants, parents and community members to ensure success for all students. Parents have the opportunity to receive non-categorical special education services for children who need extra support.
