Mission Statement

“John Burroughs Middle School is committed to helping each student develop a lifelong desire to learn. Students obtain a set of skills that enables them to meet future educational, interpersonal and vocational challenges. We strive to exist as an educational community in which students, staff, parents and the community work together to ensure that students receive a quality, cross-disciplinary education that emphasizes achievement for all, promotes multicultural awareness, celebrates diversity, encourages critical and creative thinking, supports the effective use of technology and develops strong character and social skills.”

Dear families and friends,

Welcome to John Burroughs Middle School. As principal of Burroughs, I take pride in our school and hope that together, we can provide our students with the support and encouragement needed to help them grow into healthy, responsible adults. Located on the northwest side of Milwaukee, Burroughs is one of the few remaining traditional middle schools in the MPS district. We serve students in grades 6-8, equipping them with the resources and skills needed to perform well in high school.

Our challenging academic program encourages students to think critically and express themselves. With a standards-based curriculum for all students in Reading, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science, staff members help students establish a solid educational background. Fine Arts classes give students the opportunity to hone their individual skills and unique talents while providing them with new perspectives and creative experiences.

Because our Library/Media Center features a full computer lab as well as print resources, students always have online information at their fingertips. We provide opportunities for independent study, technology-assisted instruction and the use of supplemental materials to aid understanding of the concepts taught in the classroom.
