Language Arts/Writing

In preparation for high school, students attending Burroughs familiarize themselves with advanced research skills used to complete a paper that lists resources and summarizes facts. Because technology is integrated into the academic curriculum, students use computer software and the Internet to research a topic and organize their paper. They enhance their speaking skills by using resources to defend their ideas in the classroom. By the time they enter high school, students have learned to judge effective writing and speaking and make informed judgments about the media and products.

Reading

By reading for meaning and exploring different themes, students apply new strategies and use reading as a resource to gain information. As they progress in their education, students evaluate a variety of texts and transform into critical readers by analyzing whether or not sources of information are accurate and valuable. Reading is a critical area for students. Highly skilled readers usually perform well in other academic subjects. The Burroughs staff works with students on a daily basis to advance reading strength.

Mathematics

Building upon what they learned in grade 5, students apply basic skills in a range of application problems and use these skills to solve complex problems and predict results. As students develop their ability to reason and draw conclusions, they focus intently on understanding mathematical processes and finding solutions. By graduation, students explore all strands of mathematics as they justify their strategies and use appropriate mathematics terms and vocabulary.

By the time they enter high school, students are comfortable evaluating scientific ideas and applying facts. Scientific understanding is critical for success in today’s biotechnological world. The staff at Burroughs delivers hands-on learning experiments, projects and research.
