At Burroughs, students and staff value the input of families and community members regarding educational policy decisions. An active School Governance Council allows parents, staff and community members to work together in facilitating quality educational plans that enable students to achieve success in the classroom. Members are selected through a fair and open election process. Meetings include time for families to share experiences, brainstorm about creative programs and participate in decisions regarding education. In addition, School Governance Council meetings provide training and materials that help families understand academic standards and assessments and focus students on graduation.

Parents, staff and students work together to create a learning environment in which all students can succeed and celebrate their achievements. By offering many activities throughout the year that promote parental involvement, it is the staff’s hope that families will become active participants in the Burroughs community.

  • Open Houses are held in the spring and the fall and provide parents with information about various educational curriculums, promotional requirements and assessment tools used to measure their child’s progress. Students showcase their artwork in the school hallways and teachers take the time to answer questions and address concerns parents may have.

  • Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled twice a year. It is important for parents to attend these conferences regularly so that they are aware of their child’s individual progress and involvement in school.  Teachers provide insight on each student’s behavior and attitude in the classroom.

  • Grade Level Dinners are scheduled that parents may collaborate with others who have children in the same grade. These are great opportunities to meet new friends and share opinions and strategies about age appropriate learning.

  • Bingo Nights give parents a chance to win prizes while having fun with others.

  • Community Information Meetings inform parents about what is happening in the Burroughs community.

All of the parent activities afford parents an opportunity to share experiences with teachers and staff, meet new people, voice their concerns and comments, become informed of expectations held at Burroughs and participate in decisions regarding their child’s education.
