Green Team
In collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and its Green and Healthy Schools Program, Craig established a Green Team comprised of staff and students. In a self-paced program, Green Team members complete assessments on various topics, including waste and recycling, energy, water, school facilities and grounds and healthy lifestyles. These assessments provide an excellent learning opportunity for the entire school community and help the Green Team plan ways in which Craig can be more environmentally friendly. Completed assessments will be combined with student, parent and staff feedback in an effort to develop a strong action plan for Craig. The Green Team’s primary focus is to use this action plan to earn a designation as a “Green and Healthy School” through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
How can you support Craig’s green efforts?
- We currently have a composting program and worm farm, and we are always looking for donations to sustain this program. We are in need of five gallon buckets (preferably with lids, used or new), wood to build new homes for our worms and plastic Ziploc bags in which we store the worm castings so we can sell them. Your child can also bring in raw fruit/vegetable waste and donate it to the composting bins.
- You may help the adolescent’s recycling program by donating aluminum cans, Capri Sun pouches, chip and cookie bags, cell phones, plastics and paper.
- Help support our greenhouse by purchasing the plants we grow or worm castings, which make excellent fertilizer!
- Volunteer in the greenhouse or garden.
How can you make your home greener?
- Go on litter pick-ups around your neighborhood with your child.
- Recycle! Plastic (1s and 2s), glass, metal and paper are all recyclable in Milwaukee. For more information about recycling in Milwaukee, visit http://www.milwaukeerecycles.com/.
- Remember the Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
- Turn off the lights when you are not in a room and unplug appliances/computers when you are not using them.
- Try to use less water and do not leave the faucet running. Also, wash clothes in cold water.
- Try to walk, bike or ride the bus before driving.
- Remember that going green not only saves the environment, it saves you money as well!
