Community Partners

Through strong community partnerships, Craig Montessori establishes itself as an anchor within the community and enables students to extend their education beyond the classroom walls. Our learning community values our generous partners and is grateful for the new opportunities and experiences they afford our students. Field trips to local organizations and classroom visits from community leaders allow students to view the world through new perspectives and to interact with positive role models and important Milwaukee stakeholders. Knowing that community leaders and local organizations support our students and their achievements, Craig Montessori learners develop the motivation to continue their quest for new insight and knowledge.

Educators Credit Union

Educators Credit Union (ECU) established a Reading Pals partnership with the Craig Montessori elementary classrooms.  Every week, an ECU volunteer visits the school for one hour to read one-on-one with a Craig Montessori student.  Participants in the Reading Pals program were chosen from a group of students in grades 1-6 who were reading at a lower level than their classmates but were not eligible for Special Education services. Because of ECU’s support, Craig Montessori students received extra support and focused attention. Our hope is to continue this program while increasing participation.

Growing Power, Inc.

A group of seventh and eighth grade students at Craig Montessori volunteer at Growing Power, Inc. one day each month. Students care for animals and help with planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables. They also learn to produce vermicompost, which is the breakdown of waste using various species of worms. Many of the urban agricultural practices at Growing Power are mirrored in Craig Montessori’s own greenhouse. The work that the students do has enabled them to recreate organic, sustainable gardening practices that are now used in our school garden and greenhouse.
