Andrew S. Douglas was born in Boydell, Arkansas in April of 1928 to Rosie Simms and was reared by his loving parents, Cornelius and Mary Douglas. Andrew attended Fourth St. Elementary School and received his high school diploma from Lincoln High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957, a Masters degree in 1966 and his Administrative Specialist License in 1987; all from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Andrew began his professional career in 1957 as a teacher at Roosevelt Jr. High School. He rapidly advanced into the administrative ranks within the Milwaukee Public School (MPS) System. A high point in Andrew's career was his principalship at the former Parkman Jr. High School. Andrew S. Douglas commanded the respect of his students, staff, the parents and the community at large. His work at Parkman established the school as an example of his slogan "Better Than The Best". In fact, Andrew stated that some of the best years of his life were spent at Parkman Jr. High School serving as principal from 1968-1978.
The direction of Andrew's career changed in 1984 when he accepted the position of Chapter 220 Coordinator for the voluntary integration program with MPS. His quest was to open as many doors as he could for students. He was a strong proponent of cultural diversity. Andrew's philosophy of excellence in education for all students regardless of race, creed, color, or economic status was his dominant theme as he worked towards equal educational opportunities for all students.
