Supply List for 2011-2012 School Year

Thank you in advance for sending supplies for our classroom – they are greatly appreciated by all.
This year we have decided to minimize the cost of purchasing supplies for the classroom at the beginning of the year, and instead have them supplied throughout the school year when we need them most. Therefore, each family will be assigned two separate weeks of the school year and will be expected to provide a specific list of items that are needed for that particular week (e.g. tasting for a week, art supplies, tissues, paper towel, etc). The list will be sent to you the week prior to the assigned date. More details will follow in the fall.

ALL students please label with your child’s name the following items:

q    1 backpack or bag that will hold a standard size folder (I will supply the folder). If possible,
have the bag be character/cartoon-free.

q    1 pair of indoor shoes that are left in the classroom all year. The shoes should be character- and cartoon-free, no lights, no sounds, not bedroom slipper-type, must not easily fall off feet, and must be able to be worn outside (in case of fire-drill). I might recommend Crocs or a slip-on canvas shoe similar to a pair of Vans.

q    1 season-appropriate change of clothing (including under pants) in a gallon-size zip-lock bag.

q    $20.00 for: Practical Life materials, and miscellaneous project and material supplies to our Room 5 Classroom account (checks payable to Fernwood Montessori)

K5 students please bring to share:

q    1 old, over-sized t-shirt for art projects

q    2 reams unlined white copy paper

q    Your special assignment (contact me if you lose your assignment)

K4 students please bring to share:

q    1 pad of 9”x 12” watercolor paper (not spiral bound)

q    2 reams unlined white copy paper

q    Your special assignment (contact me if you lose your assignment)

K3 students please bring to share:

q    2 boxes of facial tissues made with 100% recycled paper. Try the brands Seventh Generation, 365 or similar. Character/cartoon-free box.

q    2 reams unlined white copy paper

Please do not write your child’s name on any of the materials sent in (unless noted) as they will be used by all the students.

Have a GREAT summer, and see you all in the fall.

Ms. Lorinda

Morning Snack: We have been experimenting with having snacks in room 27.  It seems that the children get hungry around 9:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., and a small snack helps them keep their attention on their work.  It also helps allow for many opportunities for children to prepare and serve food, as 2 children act as hosts and hostesses each day.  It has also been shown that eating small amounts of food every 1 ½ to 2 hours keeps the metabolism up and actually helps maintain a healthy weight.

Typical snacks we have had this year are:

A 1lb bag of carrots, celery and ranch dressing,

A 1lb bag of pretzels (12 to 15 oz),

A box of vanilla wafers,

A bag of oranges,

A small watermelon,

A box of graham crackers

A bag of apples with caramel dip.

We would like each child to bring a snack for the class 1 day per month.  That child would be the host or hostess for that day.  We will send out a schedule in the fall.

If you do not wish to send snacks, please send $1.50 per month.  If you wish to send money, please send $20.00 in an envelope marked “Snack” and your child’s name, and I will purchase a snack for your child to serve on their day.

SUPPLY LIST FOR ROOM 36

Dear Parents,

I am excited to begin a new year in a new class!  Our Montessori Materials are in place, but each child will need consumable supplies to do our Upper Elementary work. I understand that you may not have the time or resources to get everything on this extensive list.  Whatever contributions you make are appreciated.

The most critical items are the organizational materials for your child’s personal use:

1                 4 plain, 2-pocket folders

1                 1 ½inch plain color binder (please purchase d-ring style!)

1                 1 pack of 5 index dividers for the binder

1                 1 black and white composition book

1                 Plastic or metal water bottle, clearly marked with your child’s name.

1                 Inexpensive rain poncho for outdoor lessons on rainy days (dollar store ponchos are fine!)

1                 1 pair of gardening gloves.

The following items will be treated as classroom supplies for use by all children as needed:

1                 1 or more packs of 12, # 2 pencils

1                 Rubber “pinkie” pencil erasers

1                 1 pack of 12 colored pencils

1                 1 pack of 8-12 colored markers

1                 1 or 2 boxes of Prang or Crayola watercolors; 8 or 16 colors

1                 2 – 4 glue sticks

1                 Bottle of white (school) glue

1                 1 package of wide-ruled writing paper (200 sheets)

1                 1 Pack of graph paper (4 squares per inch) Don’t worry if you can’t find it!

1                 1 pair of scissors, Fiskars for Kids or similar quality

1                 1-2 reams of white or color copy paper

Less critical, but also greatly appreciated:

1                 2 rolls of paper towels

1                 1 pack of paper napkins

1                 2 boxes facial tissue

1                 1 bottle liquid hand soap (avoid scents, if possible)

1                 Roll of clear tape (Scotch or other brand)

Finally, the following items would also be appreciated:

1                 Lysol Disinfectant wipes

1                 Dish Soap

1                 Ziploc type bags – any size

1                 Masking or painter’s tape

1                 Potting soil

1                 Flower or vegetable seeds (these can be left over from your 2011 summer garden)

Cash contributions to our class supply fund are always appreciated.  I will use this money to buy consumable supplies for our lessons.  We can also accept checks made out to Fernwood Montessori School. Shopping for supplies should be a fun way to get ready for the new school year.  Most items are easy to locate, but if you can’t find something, don’t fret and don’t waste your time and gas running around town trying to find it. Please feel free to email me at holmanpk@milwaukee.k12.wi.us with questions.

Sincerely,

Paula Holman
