Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori’s academic program equips students with a strong educational foundation upon which they can build a successful future. The school curriculum promotes critical thinking and engages each student learner in an active scholastic environment. The Montessori experience offers hands-on, interactive instruction for students of any age. By learning at a level appropriate to their personal development, students gain self-confidence in their abilities and are motivated to extend their education. The dedicated Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori staff monitors student achievement throughout the school year and strives to accommodate a variety of learning styles, ensuring that individual needs are met. Students master basic skills through innovative instruction based on their educational experience.

The Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori curriculum is based on the MPS District Learning Targets, which are aligned to Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction State Standards. The school community’s hope is that students will become independent, self-confident learners with strong skills and good decision-making abilities. Language Arts/Writing

At Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori, language arts/writing instruction begins in K3-K5 with work that focuses on verbal skills and emphasizes the connection between the letter sound and its written symbol. Students express their ideas and participate in classroom discussions. Children also learn to express their ideas in writing and practice effective speaking in front of an audience of their peers.

Reading

Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori’s youngest learners use interactive, hands-on methods to prepare for the beginning stages of reading.  Students explore relationships between different letters and sounds while gaining meaning from stories.  K3 and K5 teachers read to students daily, encouraging them to identify parts of a story and connect what is read to real-life experiences. As their reading skills develop, students read aloud for practice and use picture clues to identify words.

Mathematics

Math instruction at Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori begins in K3-K5, as students practice counting and sorting, learn about colors and shapes and practice how numbers represent quantities. Children also collect, sort and represent data.

Science

K3-K5 students explore and discover the world around them while learning to appreciate the beauty of nature. These young learners scientifically observe the world, identify living and non-living things and acknowledge the importance of recycling. Children are encouraged to ask questions and experiment to find the answers.

Social Studies

The social studies curriculum at Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori includes five areas of study: Geography, History, Civics, Economics and Behavioral Sciences.  K3-K5 learners begin their journey in social studies education by exploring their role as members of a diverse society and comparing cultural traditions.

Physical Education

The overall goal of physical education (P.E.) at Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori is to develop awareness of the importance of physical activity. Students not only participate in physical exercises, but they also explore the benefits of healthy lifestyles and habits. In their early years, children practice basic movements, follow directions and learn new physical skills.  They are also encouraged to exhibit good sportsmanship and be accepting of the abilities of others.

Art

At Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori, we believe that art education is as essential to basic education as reading, writing and mathematics. As an area of study, art education focuses on how things are presented visually, knowing what beautiful art is and solving problems creatively. During their K3-K5 years, children strengthen their awareness of art while creating art and observing it in the world around them.

Health

Health education at Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori includes both a personal and community approach to health care. During their early years, children are taught the basics of caring for themselves and keeping themselves safe. K3-K5 learners also discuss healthy nutrition and learn the proper steps to take in the case of an emergency.

Music

The music curriculum at Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori provides children with musical understanding at an introductory level. Children begin their musical education by singing, learning the basics of verse and melody and appreciating musical performance. Students also learn that musical notes represent sounds.
