MGIS
Fitness Club Beginning Monday, Sept. 7th, all students in grades 3-5 will be able to participate in the MGIS Fitness Club. The Fitness Club is a voluntary run/walking club that takes place during lunch recess. The intent of this club is to get our students up and moving, thus increasing their cardiovascular endurance, and improving their overall physical fitness. Another benefit of the club is that it greatly cuts down on the incidence of inappropriate school behaviors, and the number of discipline referrals associated with such behaviors. If a student chooses to participate on any given day, he/she is welcome to walk or run laps around the marked perimeter of our playground (approx. a quarter mile). The laps must start at the red "start" line, and must be completed at the yellow "finish" line before the bell rings. When a student is finished with their laps, they will find the 5th grade monitor with their classroom's clipboard and record their laps for the day. A minimum of 2 laps and maximum of 6 laps can be recorded each day. These laps will be tallied and posted on the bulletin board outside of the gym every week. Last year, 200 students participated in the club, and they walked/ran over 3,700 miles! Participants will be rewarded for their efforts to improve their physical fitness and overall health. Students reaching mile markers will receive the following incentives: 5 miles earns a certificate, 25 miles earns a water bottle, 50 miles earns a bracelet, 100 miles earns a t-shirt, 200 miles earns a gym bag, 300 miles earns a hoodie, 400 miles earns a long sleeve t-shirt, and 500 miles earns a pullover jacket. The miles walked/run are cumulative, and will be carried over to the next year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school (414.393.5600). With childhood obesity and other health ailments on the rise, every little bit we can do will make a difference. Thank you and I look forward to another great year of physical activity! Sincerely, Herr Arndt |
