Learning Targets

In 2003, Milwaukee Public Schools created Learning Targets for each subject area and grade level. These targets detail what is taught throughout the year. Parents are sent copies of the Learning Targets and encouraged to discuss them with teachers. Posters are also on display in the school. Teachers can provide samples of student work so that parents know what is expected from a child at his/her grade level. All schools in MPS work toward the same Learning Targets, which in turn are aligned with Wisconsin State Standards. Please click on the image below to download the Learning Targets brochures.

Reading

The Goodrich staff uses the Comprehensive Literacy Framework when designing reading lessons, with classroom data driving curriculum decisions. By employing research-based instructional strategies using the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series, students are able to learn through whole group instruction with flexible guided reading groups. Teachers meet individual student needs through differentiated instruction, instructing students in both whole group and cooperative ground settings. Goodrich is a recipient of the Reading First grant and as a result, has instituted a 90-minute uninterrupted reading block for K5 – Grade 3 students. With access to large classroom libraries, students are provided with an extensive collection of resources and materials.

Writing/Language Arts

Like the reading lessons at Goodrich, writing lessons are designed using the Comprehensive Literacy Framework, with classroom data driving curriculum decisions. Teachers model the writing process using the Six Traits Writing Program, which calls for development of ideas, organization, a clear voice, careful word choice, fluency and proper convention strategies. Through constructive feedback, the Goodrich staff enables students to critique their own writing skills and write for a variety of mediums.

Mathematics

To ensure that all students are learning, the Goodrich staff uses a variety of techniques to accommodate all learning styles. Everyday Math is supplemented with teacher-generated lessons to provide students with a solid math education. Through whole group instruction and small, flexible groups, teachers model math strategies and processes. The use of think-alouds and think-pair-share with partners allows students to collaborate with their peers to enhance their problem-solving skills and methods. At Goodrich, mathematics topics include: Algebraic Relationships, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics and Probability, and Number Operations and Relationships.

Science

The Goodrich staff uses the MPS-adopted Harcourt Series to teach science lessons. Students learn scientific processes by participating in hands-on experiments guided by staff members. Teachers are encouraged to organize field trips that students may learn to apply topics covered in the classroom to experiences in the real world.

Social Studies

At Goodrich, students are expected to be aware of current events and social issues. Through discussions on such topics, students form individual opinions and develop into socially responsible citizens. The Goodrich staff also incorporates lessons on other cultures, creating an atmosphere of respect and appreciation for the unique differences between groups of people. Field trips are encouraged in an effort to provide students with opportunities to see through new perspectives.

Health

To encourage healthy living and positive nutritional choices, many teachers at Goodrich allow students to bring in healthy snacks for a mid-morning break. This helps students stay focused and gives them the energy needed to maintain their focus in the classroom. Students learn about a variety of topics that help them stay physically fit. These include:

  • Heart Rate: Students learn how to take and calculate their own personal resting and target workout rates.

  • Skeletal System: Students identify different bones and their functions.

  • Circulatory System: Students learn how cells move throughout the body.

  • Muscular System: Students learn the importance of drinking water and research the muscular system.
