Parents

Each student’s first teacher is his or her parent or guardian. Parents enable teachers to do their jobs well by keeping their children motivated and excited to learn. For this reason, Hi-Mount considers parent involvement extremely valuable and keeps all lines of communication open among parents, faculty and staff.

The Community School Management Team (CSMT) is comprised of six elected parents who are highly involved in the implementation and evaluation of the school’s education plan. Parents are also encouraged to join one or more of Hi-Mount’s five standing committees. The committees coordinate Family Literacy Nights and work to keep parents actively involved in the school.

Hi-Mount parents are encouraged to use the Family Center as a unique resource. The Family Center is located within the school and offers parents a variety of services, including support groups for parenting, housing assistance and pre-school health screenings. The center is designed to give parents a sense of community and fellowship with other parents. Additionally, the Family Center provides a part-time family coordinator whom families can contact in a confidential and comfortable manner. It also features the Family Leadership Academy, a support group facilitated by the school social worker, which meets on Saturdays at the center and other MPS locations.

The school also offers specific programming for Hi-Mount dads. The group of fathers meets on a weekly basis to discuss issues on how to bring the “male” component into supporting the power of education.

Hi-Mount provides numerous family programs such as:

  • Family Nights
  • Read-Ins with Mom and Dad
  • Taste of Soul
  • Math Literacy Nights
  • Multi-grade camping trips

Because parents play such an integral role in their child’s education, they are encouraged to volunteer their time and energy by assisting classroom teachers or chaperoning field trips.
