At Hi-Mount Community School, students are exposed to and have access to a wide variety of technological resources, including a state-of-the-art Library Media Center. Technology is a priority at Hi-Mount and an integral part of its curriculum. Students are encouraged to use the resources available to them from an early age. These resources reinforce concepts students are already learning and mastering in the classroom, such as reading abilities and math calculations. Students also improve upon their keyboarding technique, a vital skill to have in today’s fast-paced, computer-centered world. Finally, as students progress and grow, they learn to use the Library Media Center to conduct research and expand their knowledge.

While the Internet offers endless opportunities for students to explore new information, Hi-Mount realizes the extreme importance of using this tool responsibly. Students are taught to use discretion when surfing the Web by visiting safe sites. The educational Web sites listed below are wonderful tools for students to use to enhance their academic skills and, gain new insight and have fun on the Internet. Students can use the computers at Hi-Mount to explore these sites or they can surf them at home with their families.

Houghton Mifflin’s Education Place allows students to play fun learning games based on the material they learn in school.
At Fact Monster, students can find answers to all the questions they may have. Fact Monster provides an online almanac, dictionary and encyclopedia. It also has information that will help students successfully complete their homework.
NOGGIN, a Nick Jr. Web site, is sponsored by Nickelodeon. NOGGIN is designed for the youngest learners at Burroughs and offers instructional games, videos, a television schedule and printing materials. It also has a page specifically for parents. NOGGIN uses a “connected learning” approach, linking key educational content with experiences children know and love.
At BrainPOP, students can explore an animated educational site, discovering new topics and interesting facts.
The Kaboose Family Network provides families with creative ideas on how to spend time together and celebrate the seasons.
At Funbrain, students can play a variety of educational games.
Soft Schools features worksheets, games and activities to reinforce topics learned during the school day.
At Kids Turn Central, students can laugh, learn and play online.
Learn 4 Good offers a variety of free online games that students can play. Educational games and puzzles enhance learning.
PBS Kids Online allows kids to interact with their favorite television characters. It also provides a variety of pages where children can learn and explore! PBS Kids Online can be accessed at http://www.pbskids.org.
At Disney’s Club Penguin (www.clubpenguin.com), students are asked to complete daily challenges that sharpen their skills.

At Millsberry.com (www.millsberry.com), students can explore a virtual city. Each location on the map asks them to complete a fun, educational task.
Students are encouraged to visit any branch of the Milwaukee Public Library and take advantage of all the resources available. They can visit the library online at http://www.mpl.org.
Websoup, http://websoup.wikispaces.com/, is the MPS Librarian’s space to generate lists of Web sites for use in various curricular areas with students.

By creating an account with Raz Kids, students can read and listen to stories, take quizzes and learn more about the characters.

At Starfall, students can learn comprehension strategies and enhance their phonics skills. Starfall encourages children to read for enjoyment and provides them with a wide variety of online resources.

Carol Hurst’s Children’s Literature Site provides a variety of reviews of great books for kids, ideas on how to use these books in the classroom and a collection of books and activities relating to particular subjects, curriculum areas, themes and professional topics.
Parental permission is needed to access Kids’ Space Connection. Kids’ Space Connection is an international meeting place for children and school teachers. Students can communicate with people all around the world. They can also contribute to interesting projects and join a variety of clubs.
Word Central features an online dictionary and games that help children gain familiarity with new words.
