Belief Statement

“At O.W. Holmes, we believe that teachers, parents and community are an integral part of the learning process and the success of our school. Students are regarded as individuals with unique physical, social, emotional, intellectual and cultural needs. They deserve to learn in a safe, comfortable environment. Learning should incorporate activities that focus on individual differences and learning styles of each student. In order to enhance the self-esteem of students, O.W. Holmes builds positive relationships, models mutual respect, involves parents and serves as a leader in the community.”

At O.W. Holmes, family involvement is regarded as a necessity in providing students with a solid educational foundation. Students rely on a combination of support from teachers and from their families, in hopes that they may always be learning and surrounded with encouragement. A variety of meetings, events and activities are held during the year to keep parents and guardians involved at O.W. Holmes. These include:

• Parent Orientation (August)
• Open House (September)
• Book Club (monthly)
• Parent Teacher Organization (monthly)
• School Governance Council (monthly)
• Parent Conferences by appointment and one regularly scheduled each semester
• Math/Science Night
• Literacy Night
• Student Dances
• Folk Fair/Holiday Winter Program
• After-school Adult/Child Enrichment Programs

The School Governance Council and PTO are active in setting the direction of the school as well as providing input on the school budget. These two groups also participate in the review and planning of O.W. Holmes’ Title I program. 

Parents are encouraged to take advantage of the many volunteer opportunities at O.W. Holmes. By spending time at their child’s school, parents maintain an active role in education. Volunteer opportunities include:

• Tutoring in the Community Learning Center
• Helping in the Library
• Governance Council
• PTO Activities
• Classroom assistance coordinated with individual teachers
• Chaperoning field trips

In addition, parents are kept closely informed of school news using a monthly newsletter and a Tuesday folder where all school to home communication takes place. Student work is sent home on a weekly basis that parents may monitor their child’s progress at O.W. Holmes.
