Extracurricular Activities

image of students during earth dayHopkins Street School is home to a range of wonderful organizations, clubs and teams that are a fun way for students to establish relationships with their peers and teachers, express creativity and further their education even after the school day ends. The following programs focus on building students’ social skills and confidence as they explore new talents. While the activities are recreational, they instill values such as responsibility, respect and hard work. We encourage all students to become involved in extracurricular activities at Hopkins.

For more information on any extracurricular program, please call (414) 267-0600.

Hopkins offers the following extracurricular programs:

Student Council – Student Council affords students the opportunity to participate in service learning, which links the curriculum content to community service activities such as Earth Day Cleanup, Advocate for Attendance, fundraisers and other recreational events at Hopkins. Students involved in Student Council help teachers with special tasks and have a say in the planning of activities.

Operation Dream – Operation Dream was founded in 2006 and is designed to give young males, from ages four to 17, the support and guidance they need to become responsible adults. This peer-mentoring program fosters academic and social skills and empowers students to become strong leaders.

Select 20 – Participants in the Select 20 program are able to receive one-on-one academic tutoring from certified teachers. Students have the opportunity to improve their skills in subject areas where they need more time, assistance or unique teaching approaches.

Boyz II Men – Boyz II Men is a group for boys in grades 6-8. It focuses on healthy decision-making. The group serves as a great support network for participants, who develop connections to their classmates and teachers through the program.

Basketball – Hopkins’ basketball program is a great way for students in grades 3-8 to practice good sportsmanship while honing their athletic abilities. Most importantly, it’s a wonderful way for students to have fun. Our coaches build participants’ skills and knowledge of the sport while strengthening player stamina and cooperation.

Cheerleading – Students in grades 5-8 are welcome to join Hopkins’ cheerleading squad, which performs routines full of jumps, cheers and dances at sporting events to cheer on our Eagles.

Family Fun Nights – The Hopkins community celebrates our families during Family Fun Nights, including Harvest Festival, Math Family Game Night and Literacy Night. Students and their families engage in activities that support academics and can easily be done at home while getting to know teachers, staff and other Hopkins families.

Parent/Child Book Club – The Parent/Child Book Club offers a fun way for the entire family to take part in reading while helping students develop lifelong literacy habits.

Boys & Girls Club – With the Boys & Girls Club located only five minutes away from Hopkins, students walk together after school as part of our Safe Walk Program in partnership with the Milwaukee Police Department. The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee is the oldest and largest youth-serving agency in the city.

Know Thyself – Know Thyself is a group for girls in grades 6-8 that focuses on healthy decision-making. The group is a great way for girls to develop a school-based support network with teachers and classmates.

Baseball – Students in grades 3-8 are welcome join the Hopkins CLC baseball team. Students learn the fundamentals of the game and have the opportunity to play on a Little League team.

Art Club – Hopkins’ certified art teacher engages students in creative art projects both during the school day and during after-school programs.

Walking Club – Students in grades 3-8 have the opportunity to be involved in our Walking Club, which connects physical activity with math and geography skills. Students track their steps using pedometers and measure the distance they have travelled across Wisconsin.

Love & Logic – Parents have the opportunity to engage in Love & Logic, a program that teaches parents different conversation and discipline techniques for working with their children.

TATU – Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) is a program that encourages students to stay tobacco-free. Students participate in a peer-education program in which middle school students are trained to teach elementary students about the hazards of tobacco use.

ReCharge! – Students in grades 2-6 take part in the ReCharge! program as a part of the Hopkins CLC. The curriculum, supported by the NFL, teaches students about nutrition while engaging them in physical activities.
