A charter school is a publicly funded school that has been granted more autonomy through the exemption from some rules and regulations that other public schools must conform to. In exchange for this autonomy, a charter school is held directly accountable for the results that it outlined in its governing contract or “charter”.
Humboldt Park K-8 School was granted its charter status in 2004 by The Milwaukee Board of School Directors based on the innovative approach to education as written by Humboldt Park K-8 School’s staff, parents and community members. This collaborative process of shared decision making was one of the primary reasons for pursuing our school’s charter. It has empowered the members of our learning community to make choices to ensure a quality education for all students.
Humboldt Park K-8 School has invested heavily in technology to prepare students with the necessary skills they will need in the twenty-first century. This is achieved by purposefully integrating technology throughout the curriculum rather than teaching computer skills in isolation. Students are challenged through the use of; two state-of-the-art computer labs as well as classroom computers, up-to-date software, a school wide integrated video system, video conferencing equipment, and digital media equipment.
Direct Instruction is a well-researched, fast-paced, method of teaching that engages students with constant interaction with their teacher through the use of rhythmic dialogue and repetitive practice. This method of teaching was first developed by Siegfried Engelmann of the University of Oregon in 1968. Since then it has been constantly refined and developed and is now used in thousands of schools around our country as well as Canada, the UK and Australia.
Humboldt Park K-8 School employs a full-time art, gym and library media specialist, as well as a part-time music instructor. These dedicated professionals provide their expertise to each grade level using developmentally appropriate methods. We also have a fully staffed ESL program that teaches students from various backgrounds how to speak and use English.
Our on-site Community Learning Center offers six to eight classes a night which include Chess, Volleyball, Drama, Cheerleading, Math, Art, Guitar, Reading, Basketball and much more. These programs are taught by our own staff, parents, college students, Urban Ecology professionals, as well as other talented members of our community.
With its smaller student population and lower student/teacher ratio, members of a K-8 school find that they have a closer connection to their learning community. Other benefits come from the positive interaction between older and younger students. While older students gain self-esteem and develop responsibility as mentors, younger students are provided with a positive role model and a sense of belonging. Humboldt Park K-8 School’s 6th-8th grade program has been carefully designed to help students successfully transition to high school.
Can parents take a tour of Humboldt Park K-8 Charter School while classes are in session? Parents are welcome to tour our school any day that classes are in session. Please drop by and see what a great school we have. Eugene Vlies, Principal-294-1700
“We enrolled our
child at Humboldt Park because they offer a full-day K4 program and our
school district (St. Francis) only offered a half day program. We intended
to move him to St. Francis for K5, but were so impressed with the school
that we decided to keep him enrolled. We had not experienced public schools
before, as our teenage daughter attends a local parochial school. We found
that the level of individual attention, quality of teaching staff, and
organized, professional administration at
We love the diversity that
