What is a charter school?

A charter school is a publicly funded school that has been granted more autonomy through the exemption from some rules and regulations that other public schools must conform to. In exchange for this autonomy, a charter school is held directly accountable for the results that it outlined in its governing contract or “charter”.

Why did Humboldt Park K-8 School pursue a charter status?

Humboldt Park K-8 School was granted its charter status in 2004 by The Milwaukee Board of School Directors based on the innovative approach to education as written by Humboldt Park K-8 School’s staff, parents and community members.  This collaborative process of shared decision making was one of the primary reasons for pursuing our school’s charter. It has empowered the members of our learning community to make choices to ensure a quality education for all students.

What is “Direct Instruction”?

Direct Instruction is a well-researched, fast-paced, method of teaching that engages students with constant interaction with their teacher through the use of rhythmic dialogue and repetitive practice. This method of teaching was first developed by Siegfried Engelmann of the University of Oregon in 1968. Since then it has been constantly refined and developed and is now used in thousands of schools around our country as well as Canada, the UK and Australia.

What are some of the advantages of a K-8 school?

With its smaller student population and lower student/teacher ratio, members of a K-8 school find that they have a closer connection to their learning community. Other benefits come from the positive interaction between older and younger students. While older students gain self-esteem and develop responsibility as mentors, younger students are provided with a positive role model and a sense of belonging. Humboldt Park K-8 School’s 6th-8th grade program has been carefully designed to help students successfully transition to high school.

Parent Testimonials

“We enrolled our child at Humboldt Park because they offer a full-day K4 program and our school district (St. Francis) only offered a half day program. We intended to move him to St. Francis for K5, but were so impressed with the school that we decided to keep him enrolled. We had not experienced public schools before, as our teenage daughter attends a local parochial school. We found that the level of individual attention, quality of teaching staff, and organized, professional administration at Humboldt Park exceeded that of the parochial school. We have recommended this school to several other families.” Terry and Jackie Dzikiewicz

We love the diversity that Humboldt Park offers our children. It is a great learning environment where differences are valued.

I have two children attending Humboldt Park School in second and fourth grades.  The School is excellent.  I have been so impressed by the quality and caring staff.  Humboldt Park School is continuously looking for new ways to improve, and they encourage strong parental involvement.  The Direct Instruction curriculum is very effective, and teachers are always finding new ways to supplement the curriculum with enriching instruction from other sources.  The School has a strong focus on technology with an excellent Robotics program.  They encourage personal responsibility and have instilled a program of Restorative Justice that has been embraced by the whole staff and student body.    This has helped to reinforce my child's  moral compass.  The diverse student population has exposed my children to many different cultures.  I am so proud to say that my children are getting a quality education and learning how to become responsible members of the community while attending Humboldt Park School.
