Information: For over ten years, I have helped students in MPS find their voice through the exploration and study of language arts. Upon receipt of my Post Baccalaureate Teaching Degree from UW-Milwaukee in 2001, I began teaching at Alexander Hamilton High School. The majority of my experience at Hamilton included teaching 9th and 10th Grade Literary Studies, a focus I maintain at Rufus King. I am involved in the development and implementation of the Middle Years Program, the area of IB that involves grades 6-10. I currently teach English 9 Literary Studies and 10th Grade British Literature. These courses strive to develop the close reading skills and academic writing skills needed for college level courses started in the 11th grade.
I fully understand how the power of words stretches beyond the academic world. My Communications/Writing degree from UW-Stevens Point (1992) prepared me for the vast array of communications that were required for my many years in the business world as an inside and outside salesperson. I strive to bring this real world experience and relevancy to the curriculum.
Since my early years in teaching at Hamilton, I have been an advisor for the student Writer’s Club. I have witnessed the transformation of Slam Poetry (Spoken Word) from an underground movement and unrecognized art form to a thriving and expanding form of expression that now is recognized by major universities such as UW-Madison with scholarship opportunities for poets. Although formal academic and business writing is important, my favorite part of teaching is to help students find their creative voice and passion through poetry. Once a student is hooked on the power of words, anything is possible.
