Alumni Association Bulletin

It’s hard to believe, but on May 25th, Rufus King graduated its 74th class, adding to the wonderful legacy of our alma mater that began when its doors opened in 1934. Among this year’s graduating seniors were 89 International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidates, as well as others who took at least one IB course and test. There were 901 IB tests taken this year, equaling potential college credit. Every IB test and research paper made these students better equipped to succeed in the competitive world of higher education and the workforce.

Bold, Beautiful Improvements Planned
To celebrate King’s 75 year history, the Alumni Association hopes to work with King’s parents and teachers to recognize King’s importance to its neighborhood and to the City of Milwaukee.

Josh Ehr ’00, an architect who graduated from the University of Minnesota, is working on plans for improving the landscaping and other features of the school grounds, hoping to make the grounds more friendly and beautiful for the school and the neighborhood.

We are seeking contributions for the project.  One vision is for a class or individual to contribute funds for the installation of benches in front of the school.  We will also be selling “bricks” inscribed with the donor’s name that will be installed in front of the school.

Distinguished Alumni Visit Their Alma Mater

Douglas Love ’84 and Thomas G. Behling ’62 were selected as Distinguished Alumni for 2009.  Neither could come to Milwaukee for AlumFest 2009, but both were able to come to Rufus King this fall. Neither had been back to King since graduation.

Love pauses in the Little Theatre (room 112) with current senior Meghan Neunschwander ’10.
Douglas Love visited on Monday,  November 23.  He attended two of Rhoda Nathan’s acting classes, sharing details of his career in children’s television and literature.  Many of the students were fans of the show, Out of the Box, which he developed and produced for the Disney Channel from October 1998 through August 2004. Douglas took time to watch students in each class perform monologues they were rehearsing, giving suggestions and encouragement.

Teacher Mark Guardalabene (parent of a Rufus King alum) hosted Behling in social studies classes.
Thomas Behling’s visit took him to just one class, Mark Guardalabene’s class in philosophy.  He shared slides taken in Afghanistan and gave a summary of his impressions on a recent trip there, consulting for the Department of Defense.  Tom worked for the CIA as an analyst and also in the intelligence section of the Department of Defense.

Rufus King Loses Two of its Beloved
Eric Ivy, Jr. ::
Eric Ivy, Jr. ’07 passed from this life December 3, 2009 at the tender age of 21.  His father, Eric Ivy Sr. ’83 is also an alum of Rufus King.

Willie Perkins, Jr. ::
Willie Perkins, Jr. ’70
passed from this life Monday, January 4, 2010 at the age of 57. A pillar of the Rufus King neighborhood and greater community, Willie Jr. inherited his parents’ popular restaurant, one of the few that upheld the quaint ambiance of yesteryear. Mr. Perkins’ Restaurant on Atkinson Ave., just north of Capitol Drive could find a veritable Who’s Who of dining clients from politicians to sports figures.  Perkins was named one of Rufus King’s Distinguished Alumni in 2007.

Homecoming 2009
Written by Carol Schaefer Broman '57

For the seventh year the members of the Alumni Association attended the Rufus King homecoming. We cheered King to victory over Bay View (35 to 18).

This year the parade took place in a downpour. The students marched bravely on, though the alumni watched under umbrellas from the sidelines.

Fortunately the weather cleared for the game…the sun even broke through the clouds at times. We applauded spectacular touchdown passes (number 26 has the nickname “hands”), ate delicious hot dogs, and admired the athleticism of King’s cheerleaders.

As usual, King’s fabulous band and drum line entertained at half time. Cheers to Mr. Durr, who directs the band program and narrated their program for the crowd.

Please join the alumni parade in 2010.

Diamond Jubilee: Open House
Principal Marie Newby-Randle, Harold Vanselow, ’40, Marian Klepetka Butzin, ’40, Mavis VanAcker Vanselow, ‘40
Principal Ralph G. Chamberlain and the teachers of Rufus King met student for the first time on September 4, 1934.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of that important day, the Alumni Association assisted King’s current principal Marie Newby-Randle and the King staff with an open house for alumni.  The graduates of 1938, 1939, and 1940 received special invitations.  Many of those graduates remember September 4, 1934 very fondly since they were part of that inaugural student body.

About thirty alumni visited the school on Friday, September 4 to roam the halls and classrooms, visit with students and teachers, and reminisce over coffee and donuts.  Even a forty minute blackout caused by a substation transformer fire didn’t dampen spirits.

AlumFest 2009
