John R. Kalwitz was elected Alderman in his first try for public office in 1968, becoming one of the youngest persons elected to serve on the Milwaukee Common Council. He was reelected seven times, serving a total of 32 years. Alderman Kalwitz served as Common Council President from 1984 – 1988 and from 1992 – 2000. In 1996, Alderman Kalwitz became the first person ever to be elected unanimously as Council President.
As Alderman and as Council President, John Kalwitz has been characterized as a master of getting things done at Milwaukee City Hall; having the ability to move legislation, build consensus, and broker deals in the public interest.
Throughout his career in public service, Alderman Kalwitz often said that it is our cities in all their glorious diversity that define our national purpose, and that our cities must be made to succeed if America is to succeed.
John Kalwitz is one of three members of the Kalwitz family to graduate from Rufus King High School. His sister Carolyn graduated in 1956 and his oldest daughter Christine graduated in 1985. John earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UW-M in 1965 and did post graduate work in Washington, D.C. and at Marquette University Law School. John and his wife of 39 years, Bonnie, moved to Laughlin, Nevada on the banks of the Colorado River in 2002 to be closer to their daughters and their families, who reside in California.
