What
is Forensics?
Forensics
is an extra-curricular activity where students have the opportunity
to express themselves through different forms of public speaking.
The categories are listed and described on www.mlfaforensics.org.
Students are coached and assisted with pieces they present at
meets. They present
their work under certain guidelines in rooms with other students in
their same category, and are scored according to regulated statewide
criteria. At a Festival,
students compete only against themselves, and win ribbons based on
individual point scores given by qualified judges.
At a Tournament,
students not only win ribbons based on individual point scores, but
are ranked in achievement and are in competition with the other
students present. High-ranking students qualify for Power Rounds against other high-ranking students from other rooms,
and are eligible based on that final competition for trophies and
medals.
How
much does it cost?
Nothing!
Studies show forensics improves test scores, self-esteem, and
presentation skills for scholastic projects.
It also adds significant weight to a student portfolio as
they compete for places in top high schools and colleges.
Forensics is one of the only extra-curricular activities
outside of sporting events still supported by MPS.
Students attending meets should have some pocket money for
snacks and drinks, as meets often last through dinner hours, but we
provide transportation for most meets round trip from LCA, and pay
all entrance fees.
Does
my child have to attend every meet?
No.
A schedule of meets that LCA will enter is provided after the
student is accepted on the team.
You simply check it against your family calendar and commit
to the meets that are convenient.
Failure to attend a reserved meet may result in a fine or
removal from the team as it costs LCA money and hurts the team’s
overall score. It is
important to reserve a place only at the meets where attendance is
certain, barring illness, injury, or emergency.
A minimum of 4 meets is required.
When
is the Forensic season?
The
team will be chosen and assembled in October, rehearse through
November, December, and January after school, and meets begin at the
end of January and run through March or early April.
Coaching sessions are by sign up, and a student must meet
with their coach at least once a week.
