ART: Lincoln Avenue art classes meet weekly to enhance the students' natural creativity and learn about great works of art. Art instruction is based on Wisconsin State Standards and the MPS learning targets. Art Club is also available to students who are gifted or enthusiastic about art.

LIBRARY: The library at Lincoln Avenue School is located on the lower level, Room 6. Every student has the privilege of visiting the library at least once every week. The school librarian provides lessons in information literacy, recommends what to read next, and checks out books to students and teachers.

Our collection includes over 10,000 items. The books, videos, and DVD's are chosen to either fit the curriculum or provide pleasure reading for our students. We also have a small professional collection. We currently have four on-line catalogs/internet stations available.

The library is open from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Parents and guardians are encouraged to volunteer and get to know the library collection.

TECHNOLOGY: Lincoln Avenue challenges our students with relevant, rigorous, and exciting technology opportunities. We have an updated computer lab as well as computers in every classroom available for preparing our children for the future.

MUSIC: Students at Lincoln Avenue receive music once a week for 45 minutes. In the music classes, students are exposed to various styles of music. They learn by listening and performing. In addition, the music department presents programs during the holidays and in the spring. The 4th and 5th grade students also have the opportunity to be a part of the choir.

The choir performs in programs at school and in the community. Fourth and fifth graders also can receive a weekly lesson on a band instrument of their choice. The band instruments come to our school courtesy of grant money awarded by the VH-1 Save the Music program. The music department has also sponsored performances by the Skylight Opera and by music groups from local middle schools.

PHY ED: The Physical Education program at Lincoln Avenue School is based on the Wisconsin State Standards and is aligned, by grade level, to the MPS district learning targets. The curriculum is based upon the Physical Education Specialist providing instruction a minimum of one day per week for each grade level.

Every student experiences a variety of activities, which include golf, bowling, cooperative learning, volleyball and much more. Students also work on skill development in areas which include kicking, throwing, catching and rhythm. In addition, Lincoln Avenue students receive some basic anatomy instruction on the bones and muscles.

PEER MEDIATION: Peer mediation is one component of our overall commitment to peaceful conflict resolution. Students who are experiencing conflict with peers can choose to use mediation in an attempt to resolve a problem. Peer mediators are students who have received training in order to help disputing students develop a mutually satisfying solution to a problem. Trained peer mediators are students from the 4th and 5th grades.

MENTORING PROGRAMS: Students are paired with an adult mentor who meets with them regularly to encourage and support them.

ROPES & CHALLENGES PROGRAM: Selected 5th grade students participate in cooperative activities to encourage team work, leadership skills, and self-esteem.

CLASSROOM GUIDANCE AND SECOND STEP LESSONS: These classes cover topics such as relaxation, personal safety, and social skills. Nonviolent problem solving is an important part of Lincoln Avenue School's culture. All students participate in the Second Step program, a violence prevention curriculum which teaches empathy, problem-solving, impulse control, and anger management. Every January is Peace Month here at Lincoln Avenue. In addition to weekly activities encouraging nonviolence, students participate in an all school program and neighborhood march to encourage peace in our school and throughout our community.

Extra Curricular & Enrichment Activities

A variety of enrichment opportunities are available for students during the school day and after school. Please look closely at these opportunities and try to include your child(ren).

ACCELERATED READER: This program allows students to advance their reading level with leveled reading books. After reading the book, they are allowed to complete a computerized quiz. This quiz gives them feedback on how well they understood the book's contents, and promotes computer skills. Many teachers also have students set weekly reading goals as well. Students earn points for each quiz passed and for meeting their goals. We promote involvement in the Accelerated Reader Program with incentives school-wide.

SAFETY CADETS: Students in 5th grade are able to serve as cadets. Their main responsibility is to assist the crossing guard with helping students safely cross the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and 18th Street. Their support helps keep all of our children safe.

SCIENCE FAIR: Students work individually, in pairs or in groups to create a science project that shows their knowledge of the scientific process. The projects are displayed for the enjoyment and learning of students, parents and judges.

SPORTS: Students in grades 1 through 5 have the opportunity to be involved in soccer. Our 4th and 5th graders can sharpen their skills on the Basketball Team and our Cheerleading Squad.

GRADE LEVEL PROGRAMS: Throughout the year, each grade level hosts a program for our parents and students. Some programs include the Hispanic Program, Patriotic Program, Peace Program, Holiday Program and Kindergarten Circus.

CHOIR: The choir is open to students in grades 4 and 5. The choir performs at the holiday program at Lincoln Avenue School and in the community.

BAND: Students in grades 4 and 5 may also take band instrument lessons. The lessons are taught weekly at Lincoln Avenue and the instruments are also housed at school. Students may rent them for a nominal fee.

FIELD DAY: At the end of the year, we have a day filled with fun events for students to celebrate the end of the year. We value parent participation to help organize and monitor this school wide event.

CLC: The Community Learning Center is an academic and recreational outreach program for students after school to receive additional academic support and enrichment opportunities. This program begins two weeks after school starts and continues until the end of May. The hours of operations are 2:25p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

DAYCARE: Lincoln Avenue School offers a convenient before and after school program that best meets the needs of our working parents. The Daycare curriculum includes opportunities for the children to work on schoolwork, play games, crafts, computers, MAD science, and fun Friday. A daily afternoon snack is also provided.
