Lloyd's Reading/Language Arts Program

Comprehensive Balanced Literacy Program
A comprehensive balanced literacy program is used to
teach reading and language arts. We have a strong emphasis on
systematic phonics instruction and reading comprehension. Skills are
developed within a literature rich environment through activities
that include reading, writing, listening, speaking, deep thinking and
research.

Curriculum
The reading curriculum at Lloyd is a balanced program
that incorporates a basal reading program, trade books, systematic
phonics instruction and technology. A wide variety of good quality
books support students' interests and skills. "Breakthrough To
Literacy," a technology program that teaches letter and sound
discrimination and introduces students to reading is implemented in
grades K4, K5 and first grade.
K4:
Rhymes, games, alphabet recognition and lots of reading to
children as well as opportunities for them to look at picture
books characterizes our K4 program. Students thrive in a
print-rich classroom. The "Breakthrough to Literacy" computer
program is also used.
-
K5:
Wright Group Program is used. This includes big books, small
student copies and picture books. The "Breakthrough to Literacy"
computer program is also used, which focuses on phonics, word
study and exploration of books. The "Bedtime Books" program is a
daily hometime activity which involves parents in reading to their
children on a daily basis.
-
Grade
1: First grade students are immersed in rich literature,
sequential reading instruction, writing and systematic phonics
instruction. The Houghton Mifflin reading series is used in
addition to Accelerated Reader, a computer program that promotes
student reading. Daily spelling tests and writing assignments
support students' beginning reading and writing
efforts.
-
Grades
2-5: The Houghton Mifflin reading program, along with trade books,
literature and informational books, is used to teach reading in
grades 2 through 5. Emphasis is on comprehension to help students
understand what they read.
