Academics

At the Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language, classroom instruction is guided by the MPS Learning Targets, which are aligned to Wisconsin state standards. By integrating technology, international resources and a dedicated staff into every classroom, students are motivated and prepared for the next grade level and beyond.

MPS Learning Targets

In 2003, Milwaukee Public Schools created Learning Targets for each subject area and grade level. These targets detail what is taught throughout the year. Parents are sent copies of the Learning Targets and encouraged to discuss them with teachers. Posters are also on display in the school. Teachers can provide samples of student work so that parents know what is expected from a child at his/her grade level. All schools in MPS work toward the same Learning Targets, which in turn are aligned with Wisconsin State Standards.

Mandarin Chinese Language Program

In addition to the strong curriculum already offered at MACL, extensive lessons from qualified professionals on the Mandarin Chinese language and culture are also provided. The Chinese Language program prepares students for success in a diverse world by building an awareness of the Southeast Asian culture. For more information on this program, take a look at our Mandarin Chinese Language Program tab on the left!

Reading

The MACL staff believes a strong reading and language foundation in the primary grades can determine the difference between success and failure in later years. MACL’s Direct Instruction Reading Mastery Program uses consistent, fast-paced instruction to help small groups of students learn at their own developmental levels. Using this method, teachers use repetition and face-to-face instruction with the goal of enabling students to read above grade level by the fourth grade.

Language Arts

Much like MACL’s reading program, the language arts curriculum is primarily composed of Direct Instruction programming and gives students a head start in language proficiency, reading comprehension and writing skills. Teachers use the Six Traits of Writing program to assess specific strengths and weaknesses in student writing and plan instruction accordingly. Students are provided with effective feedback that allows them to improve their writing using revision and editing strategies. Students are also encouraged to become accurate and precise speakers, enhancing their communication skills through the sharing of written works, the explanation of projects and various public speaking opportunities.

Mathematics

The mathematical skills students receive at MACL enable them to think critically and to apply the skills they have learned to practical, real-world situations. Math Essentials, an effective, highly interactive mathematics program, is used in all grade levels. Through this program, students learn to compute, solve problems and think mathematically.

Science

MACL’s science program is centered on unit themes, unit tests, hands-on activities, team teaching, real life experiences and literacy development. Through this program, students learn about scientific processes such as student inquiry, scientific investigation, data collection and final analysis and presentation of results. MACL’s partnership with the Neighborhood House of Milwaukee supplements classroom studies with field trips to the Neighborhood House Center and their Nature Center in Dodge County.

Social Studies

With a special focus on the Southeast Asian culture, MACL’s social studies curriculum includes geography, history, civics, economics and behavioral science. Like the science program, it is centered on unit themes, unit tests, hands-on activities, team teaching, real life experiences and literacy development. MACL students also learn about the rich history and customs of China in an effort to develop insight and understanding of this culture as compared to their own.

Fine Arts

To stimulate students’ creative potential, MACL classroom teachers provide art and music instruction. Student art is showcased in the building and students are given ample opportunities to display their artistic talents to audiences throughout the year.

Physical Education/Health

Because good health, physical activity and fitness are a key part of the learning process, MACL classroom teachers provide physical education and health instruction to their students. The curriculum allows students to develop an awareness of the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Technology

E-mail and Internet service are available throughout the MACL building. The Technology Team has developed a checklist of cumulative computer skills that children are taught over the course of their studies at MACL. Correspondence with China via email and proposed teleconferencing will be initiated between teachers and students. All students have electronic portfolios in which their work can be stored.

Special Education

MACL serves the multi-categorical (mild, moderate and comprehensive) special education needs of children with cognitive disabilities, specific learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, other health impairments and speech and language needs. In accordance with their IEP requirements, all special education students are taught with regular education students in a Least Restrictive Environment. Our special education teacher consults regularly with classroom teachers to provide a true inclusion setting and appropriate instruction as specified in each student’s IEP.
