Manitoba School is a K8 school with an enrollment of 500 children, which includes programs for children with all special education needs (including students with Orthopedic and Other Health Impairments). Manitoba School embraces high standards and expectations for all children, providing unique educational opportunities in a safe, caring, inclusive environment. Manitoba School is located adjacent to Jackson Park enhancing the school campus and providing opportunities for teaching and learning in the park.
The mission of Manitoba School is all children learning at high levels (proficiency), in all subjects, while demonstrating strength of character in attitude and behavior. The vision of Manitoba School is to be the highest achieving K8 school in MPS, meeting or exceeding the district and state averages on all standardized tests given at the district and state level, at all grade levels, by 2009-10.
Reading/Written Language: Manitoba School consistently exceeds the MPS district average score in reading at all grade levels. During the 2005 - 06 school year, teachers in grades K5 - 3 participated in the Reading First grant initiative, strengthening reading instruction at the primary grades. The Reading First grant provides over $100,000. for reading materials and teacher training for three years. Lower class sizes in K5, first, second and third grade, funded through the federal Class Size Reduction program and SAGE, offers increased opportunities to develop early literacy skills in young readers. The Manitoba Educational Plan outlines a strong commitment to small group guided reading instruction using leveled reading materials matched to students' instructional reading level. In addition, the full time Literacy Coach at Manitoba School plays a vital role in working with teachers and students to ensure that all children develop strong reading and writing skills.
Technology: Integrating technology in all areas of the curriculum, for all students, is a goal - and a reality at Manitoba School. Manitoba School has a fully functioning local school network and Internet access from every classroom, an automated library, a fully equipped Technology Center, wireless middle school classrooms utilizing laptop computers, distance learning capability, and six computers in every classroom. Manitoba teachers receive training to integrate technology into their teaching and the students' learning. In addition students with special challenges are learning with the help of assistive technology. With all these resources now available, students at Manitoba School are guaranteed a rich curriculum enhanced with the limitless possibilities of technology.
Middle School Program: The middle school program (grades 6, 7, 8) at Manitoba School is made up of four classrooms offering a small middle school community of teachers and students, providing individual attention, supervision and support. An emphasis on technology is an important focus of the middle school program.
Full Time Specialists. One of the Belief Statements for Manitoba School states ". … a well-rounded curriculum includes the Arts, Physical Education and Technology." Manitoba School is proud to offer Art, Music and Physical Education classes to all children, provided by full time Specialists. In addition, a VH1 Save the Music grant provides instruments for a full band program, with music lessons taught by the music specialists and by itinerant music teachers in brass, woodwinds, piano, strings and percussion.
Parental Involvement: Manitoba School has a long tradition of parental, neighborhood and community involvement and support. The 2005-06 school year reflected a continuation of that tradition, with an already well-established School Governance Council focusing on planning a future course for Manitoba School that will meet the needs of parents, families and children. Responsiveness to parents' needs is demonstrated by the popular before and after school child care program "Kids Club". The Manitoba PTO continues to be a thriving parent organization, sponsoring a several school wide activities that draw large numbers of parents and family members. Again this year, the total number of volunteer hours at Manitoba School exceeded 2,000 hours.
