The YRS calendar and the traditional calendar both have the same number of school days for students, 180. The YRS divides the 180 days into 9 week blocks, coinciding with our report card periods. There are 3 week breaks, called intersessions, between the blocks rather than one long break in the summer. The first day of school will be August 5, 2002. The summer break will be approximately 6 weeks long beginning June 23, 2003. |
|
Intersessions are breaks after each week report card period. Intersessions
are being planned to provide both tutorial and enrichment activities for
those students who choose to participate. Students who do not accomplish
academic expectations during the 9 week block will be encouraged to participate
in tutorial activities during the intersessions. Students who make satisfactory
progress may choose to participate in an enrichment activity such as drama
club, wood shop, or writing for the MEC web page/newspaper, just to name
a few. The sessions at MEC will be in the morning; however, community resources
will provide after school activities. Intersessions, much like summer school
in MPS, are optional.
|
|
In addition to MEC being open for intersessions, community resources
such as The Boys and Girls Club, Discovery World, the Milwaukee Public
Museum and public libraries will be called upon to provide learning activities
for our children.

Children on the YRS calendar have most of the same days off as children
on the traditional calendar such as Labor Day, Thanksgiving Recess, Convention
Days, Winter Break, Dr. M. L. King's Birthday, Spring Break, Memorial Day
and 6 weeks in the summer. However, some of the traditional summer vacation
days have been reassigned throughout the school year in the form of intersessions.
|
|
The Calendar is set up to provide academic assistance to students throughout
the school year rather than waiting until the end of the year to review
subjects that may have been taught at the beginning of the school year.
Studies show that students lose 1 month of instruction for every 3 months
of summer vacation. Students on the YRS calendar retain more information,
have improved attendance and better attitudes about school. Teachers have
more time to plan for each 9 week block. They also have the opportunity
to reflect, modify, and evaluate the curriculum based on the needs of the
students.
