Advanced Placement is a program of college level courses and examinations that gives high school students the opportunity to receive advanced placement and/or college credit. Approximately 50 percent of the nation's 21,000 high schools offer some college level AP course work, and more than 400,000 students throughout the nation participate in the program.

A student taking AP courses and AP examinations gains the following benefits:

  • Academic credit that gives the student a head start in college
  • Tuition savings
  • Exemption from college or university introductory courses and permission to take higher level courses
  • Ability to complete the degree requirements in a shorter period of time
  • Extra time in college to explore other subject areas, study abroad, or pursue internships
  • The opportunity to sharpen academic skills, allowing the student to enter college with confidence
  • Eligibility for honors and other special programs open to students who have received AP recognition
  • The opportunity to set high goals and experiences the satisfaction of meeting them
