Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts - Proficiencies

In order to be successful, MPS holds students accountable for their learning through proficiencies, which are extremely important at the middle school level. 8th grade students need to show they understand the information to move on to high school. Students earn proficiency scores ranging from 1 through 4. A score of 1 means the student is learning a MINIMAL amount of information. A score of 2 rates the student as BASIC. These students need to focus more and work hard to move to the next level. A passing or PROFICIENT score of 3 is acceptable. When the student is ADVANCED, they earn a score of 4. Students earn these proficiency scores in six areas: math, science, social studies or history, reading, writing and language arts.

In MPS, students work to earn proficiency status in two ways. The first method is ongoing throughout the school year in classroom assessments based on the state standards or most commonly called CABS, the tests students take in their classes. Students take a minimum of three CABS per semester in each academic course. The other way students can earn proficiency is through the state test or the WKCE during one week at the end of October. 8th grade students must earn proficiency from either method, but preferably both, in order to be promoted to high school. Parents are notified twice each school year at the end of each semester about their child’s proficiency scores, but they can contact a teacher directly if they have any questions about how to help them reach proficiency.
