Extracurricular Activities

Physical, social and emotional balance is a crucial element of the learning process. Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School (MSIS) encourages students to enhance their academic work by participating in extracurricular activities. These opportunities allow students to pursue new interests and collaborate with classmates. By participating in an extracurricular activity, students expand their talents and enhance interpersonal confidence for long-term success.

Tomorrow’s Men
Tomorrow’s Men is a group designed to provide support and mentoring for our grade 5 boys before they make the transition from elementary to middle school. One of the goals of the group is to maintain a sense of community and unity among students. Another aim is to help the boys establish a sense of self and offer them career options, new perspectives and life choices through the experiences of the “Men of Today.” Guest speakers are invited to share stories about their professions and how they progressed from boys in elementary school to men who make positive contributions to the Milwaukee community.

Student Organized Activities @ Recess (SOAR)
Student Organized Activities @ Recess (SOAR) is a unique initiative that has been underway at MSIS since 2003. SOAR defines specific activities at recess that help guide students to make proper choices on the playground. Positive behavior, channeled energy and good decision-making are reinforced using SOAR strategies. Since its inception, SOAR has made MSIS recess time structured and successful. The initiative has reduced the number of student conflicts on the playground and created a safer environment for children to interact and play.

We invite families and parents to visit the MSIS playground during the lunch recess to see SOAR in action. Be sure to check in at the school office first and obtain a visitor pass. For additional questions on SOAR, please call (414) 604-7600.

Art Club

Students attend art classes one time per week for an hour. As part of the curriculum, students are exposed to a variety of artists and art styles. There is also a focus on Hispanic influences in art. Students at all grade levels are able to express themselves through a variety of art experiences such as drawing, painting, sculpting and creative play. They are able to attend art field trips such as the museum, sculpture gardens and the theatre. In addition to art class, students have the opportunity to participate in art contests. Some of our contests include the creation of a fire safety poster, design of a Milwaukee Admirals card and writing of pine tree poetry. Students also paint murals and make crafts that are sold at our schoolwide market, “El Mercado.” Annually, students participate in creating and decorating a holiday tree for downtown Milwaukee. As part of the Art Club, students in grades 3-5 complete fundraising projects and special projects, such as weaving on a loom.

Flightlink MPS/EAA Partnership Program

flight link logoOur grade 4 students have the opportunity to participate in Flightlink, Milwaukee Public Schools/EAA partnership program. The Flightlink, MPS/EAA partnership program is an overnight experience at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Students participate in a curriculum that was developed and aligned to district and state learning standards. It incorporates areas of aviation with science, math and social studies. Participants spend two days working on team building skills, designing and launching rockets and planes, learning to fly a simulated airplane and touring the EAA AirVenture Museum.

Most MSIS students have never been away from home before. This field trip provides a unique opportunity for the students to develop teamwork and academic skills while having a safe, positive experience away from home.
