Immersion Program

Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School (MSIS) is one of four schools in Milwaukee Pubic Schools (MPS) that offers an outstanding language immersion program for students from K4 through grade 12. Other MPS immersion schools include Milwaukee French Immersion School, Milwaukee German Immersion School and the Milwaukee School of Languages.

MPS language immersion schools provide students with a solid academic foundation with instruction in all basic areas. The majority of instruction is taught in the target language of French, German or Spanish. Students learn to read, write and speak fluently in English as well as the target language. These language and communication skills equip the students with the knowledge and tools to succeed in high school and beyond.

The immersion learning method gives students an alternate manner in which they can process and learn new information in our interconnected world. Not only does second language acquisition provide students with higher scores on standardized tests in Reading, Language Arts and Math, but it also bolsters writing and comprehension abilities. Learners show improved listening, memory and problem-solving skills. Immersion education prompts cognitive development in the areas of mental flexibility, creativity, divergent reasoning and higher-order thinking skills. In the long-term perspective, bilingual communication may offer greater career opportunities.
