Who we are

The Milwaukee Public Schools district is the largest public school district in the State of Wisconsin, with an enrollment of more than 82,000 students. In 2007, the district applied for the Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) grant to provide intervention resources and programs for students in dozens of Milwaukee schools — both MPS and non-public schools.

In 2007, an $8.5 million grant was awarded. By terms of the Department of Education, Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice, the funding for SS/HS is spread out over four years. The schools will utilize these resources through the 2010-2011 school year. The Initiative empowers the Milwaukee community to create coordinated programs that reach out to youth and families.

Designated SS/HS schools are assisted with grant-funded programs and activities by a number of City of Milwaukee partners. These schools have the opportunity to implement new programs and activities by working with SS/HS partners. Representatives from these organizations comprise the Core Management Team. The Core Management Team meets monthly to share program updates and brainstorm for upcoming outreach opportunities.

Our Partners

In addition to the individual commitments each partner organization has made to SS/HS, all partners collaborate and share a set of responsibilities towards making the Initiative successful. These include:

  • Maintaining active participation in the communitywide partnership described in the MPS SS/HS Comprehensive Plan.
  • Engaging in collaborative planning with other MPS SS/HS partners to promote safe school environments and healthy relationships among staff and students.
  • Working with other MPS SS/HS partners to develop a comprehensive districtwide emergency response plan and trained crisis management team.
  • Reviewing the quarterly status reports sent to all MPS SS/HS partners.
  • Participating in the MPS SS/HS listserv, the semi-annual MPS SS/HS Project Partnership community forum and the semi-annual MPS SS/HS Project Improvement Meeting.
  • Providing data necessary for evaluation of this proposal to the local evaluator.
  • The Team Leader, or representative for each organization, will work very closely with the SS/HS Project Director to ensure that all services outlined in the contract are being provided as described, as well as, making sure that all information that is required by MPS is being reported in a timely fashion.
