Teens Who Care (TWC) students are selected for the group based on teacher recommendations, and their participation is always voluntary. Teens who take part in the program are involved in the decision making throughout the year. They help to set the group guidelines, chooses service projects, set their own learning goals, assess their successes, and plan their own incentives. Each school chooses its own student representatives and projects, and develops its own system of training needed for their unique service projects. The minimum number of participants is 6 per school and some schools have up to 25 students involved. In addition to the activities at the individual school, the students also take part in three large group activities together. These include a citywide introductory program, a mid-year two day training, and a final celebration. In addition, there has been summer programming for interested teens to further reinforce individual and leadership skills through a ropes and challenges curriculum. |
