understanding how the internet works It starts with a server equipped with a modem or network connection You have your own computer equipped with a modem or network connection. You install a BROWSER, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer to help you access the internet. On your computer, you set up an account with a PROVIDER. You get a access name and password to access your PROVIDER's server. In your BROWSER, you set up the Preferences(Options) to access your PROVIDER's server and choose a Home Page. (For MPS, this must be the MPS Home Page so you can get through the firewalls.) When you contact your PROVIDER, they check out your access name and connect you to the internet via their server. When the Home Page comes up you will see a "Go to" line called the URL(Universal Resource Language) It usually starts with "http://". This is where you type in the location you want to go to. BOOKMARKS copy the URL so you can return to a site you like. You can add, delete, or reorder your bookmarks. It makes it easier to get back to them. Your teacher will bookmark sites on the internet to help you find interesting information. E-MAIL is is electronic mail, sent from your computer. E-mail programs usually come with the BROWSER, however they can also be a stand alone program, such as Eudora. |

what can I do on the internet At school the internet is available to help you learn more about the world and the subjects you are studying. You can find an answer to a question, find more information about a subject, and even talk to people who are studying the same material you are. At school the internet is NOT for playing game programs, buying or selling, chatrooms, or copying music or programs. If your parents allow you, these are things you can do at home. If you try to do these at school, you may loose your "Driver's License". |
