Project STAY is a one-year alternative program for 100 high school students, ages 16 to 21, who are at risk of dropping out of school. The mission of Project Stay is to change failure into success by helping students make positive connections with school, vocational training, work, mentors and tutors, families, and our community.
There are four teachers, a counselor, and an educational assistant on the staff of Project STAY. Staff members work in teams to help students get:
* training in basic academic skills such as reading and math,
* training in a vocational skills area such as nursing assistant,
* learning how to get and keep a job,
* and working part time.
Academic work, vocational assessments, and all other services are completely individualized. Some of these activities take place in our "one room school" atmosphere, where students punch in and punch out just as if they were at a job. Students spend 2 hours and 45 minutes a day at Project STAY, and an equivalent amount of time at a vocational education site or on the job. While on the job, counselors work closely with employers to resolve any problems which might arise, and to evaluate student performance.
