Who
was Gilbert Stuart?
Gilbert Stuart was
a famous early American portrait artist. Stuart (1755-1828) worked during
the years that the United States was being founded. His work provides
many of the familiar images we have of his famous American contemporaries.
Most notably, he painted the picture of George Washington that is found
on the one dollar bill. His style of painting influenced the work of many
American artists who followed him.
Gilbert Stuart Elementary
School in Milwaukee was built in 1967. During this time a number of Milwaukee
Public Schools were named after Americans who, like Stuart, were noted
for their contributions to the arts and literature.
