Choosing
A School
Choosing a school for your child is very important. It is
crucial for parents/guardians to be knowledgeable about
all of the choices MPS has to offer. Your involvement and
informed decision help to ensure that your child is receiving
services that best suit his or her learning style.
Location
Neighborhood schools are a great way of building your child’s
sense of community. The close location makes it easier for parents to stay involved.
Bussing
Transportation
regions can determine your child’s eligibility for enrollment
in certain schools.
Bilingual
Education
Preserving and enriching culture
through language development can aid in both a child’s
learning and increased self-esteem. Two-way bilingual and
language immersion programs can give English-speaking children
an edge in today’s global market.
Size
For some children, the size of the school may affect learning.
New small high schools focus on quality relationships, rigorous
academics and relevant learning experiences. Each small high
school has a unique learning
mission and no more than 400 students.
Availability
of extended-day care
Several MPS schools offer Community
Learning Centers, daycare and other extended day activities.
Contact the school for program details.
Academic
Programs
MPS offers a wide array of academic, cultural and traditional programs.
These programs range from Gifted & Talented to WE INDIANS.
Special
Education
All MPS schools are committed to meeting your child’s
learning needs as specified in his/her Individualized Education
Program (IEP). However, certain schools may be better equipped
to serve children with severe special needs.
High/Scope
High scope is a preschool to age eight curriculum model that provides activities
appropriate for each stage of a child’s mental and physical
growth. Teachers are trained to use the High/Scope method and
the classroom is equipped to support the child's learning
skills acquired in preschool and elementary school.
SAGE
Student Achievement Guarantee in Education provides funding
to schools to lower the class size in K5- grade 3 and provide
additional assistance. The target class size is 15. More than 80
elementary schools offer SAGE services. See school listings.
K-8
and K-12 programs
Parents may feel that their children's best fit is in a school
they can attend from age four all the way up through middle or
high school. MPS offers several such schools. See school listings.
Year-
round Schools
Year round schools have the same number of school days
as other MPS schools but have longer breaks in October and
April and no school in July.
