Escaping the Matrix
The late psychologist Dr. Amos Wilson explained that the biggest impediment to the empowerment of our youth is that their sense (consciousness) of purpose and responsibility has been "falsified".
What this means is that many children of color are unaware of their true potential and the systemic oppression that suffocates them.
Like the movie "The Matrix", the world is not what it seems. What we do see is a world of familiarity, dreams/mirages, and inevitable fate. What we don't see is injustice, caste, oppression, and isolation.
The media and the 'street institution' are Sirens who have supplanted the 'village' (families, schools, churches, neighborhoods...) as principle navigators, while so many youth float on toward jagged shores of self-defeat and personal destruction.
It is from the center of this crisis that Baba, Jennifer, and Marty envisioned a school that would stand at the nexus of technology and 'consciousness'. Technology would serve as a tool to accelerate academic achievement, thereby freeing time to break the matrix.
This effort to re-root
the 'village' and open 'seeing' eyes is what we call our Restoration of
Consciousness (R.O.C.) program.
