So you think you might be interested in joining us here? We'd be glad to have you if this is the right place for you.

You might be a perfect fit here, maybe not. THS is not for everybody and that's fine. We're only a part of the MPS puzzle, and there may be other schools that fit you better.

Some students stay with us until graduation and others only stay awhile, getting on-track until they 'transition' back to another high school.

**** We invite you to read and explore this page and the whole website to get a sense of who we are. ****

Who we are

Transition High School is a regular Milwaukee Public high School where you can get a regular diploma.
We are not an alternative school.

At Transition we accept students who are or have been:

  • Locked up
  • Kicked out of school
  • Always skipping out
  • Close to graduation, but gave up (3-6 credits)

How we roll

Here at THS there are two kinds of work expected from you:

Work on your school transcript, and work on your life transcript.

For the 'school' part, most of your classes are taken on a computer.

You will learn as much and be expected to do as much as if you were sitting in any other regular classroom.

There will be teachers all around to help, but you need to be the kind of person that is motivated to get things done on your own.
If you are comfortable with technology and can stay focused, you would be a good fit here.

Before you know it, you'll have classes done and credits rollin' in.

And as you build your school transcript, you'll move closer and closer to your goal.

But there's more to education than just the academics.

The academics are very important, but if you don't grow into the quality person you were destined to be, what good is the 'book learning'?

We all need to work on our life transcript, and here at THS we expect you to show just as much dedication and effort to transforming your inner self.

We don't want you to walk out our doors with just a diploma, you're bigger than that. We need you to change the world!
You hold the power of the future in your hands, shape it into something better than what exists now.

One things is true, you have to start with the person in the mirror.

Here at THS you'll be involved in a program called R.O.C.
This is just how we do things up in here. If you're with the school, then you gotta be with the program.
In the business world they call that a 'non-negotiable'. That means you got no choice!

R.O.C. stands for 'Restoration Of Consciousness'.
What that means is that we believe the world has been lying to you about some things.
About who you are, what your potential is, what things are important, and what things are not important.

It's almost like we're being put to sleep so that we don't see how things 'really' are.

When you are awake (not sleep), you are 'conscious'. When someone gets 'knocked out' we say that they are 'unconscious'.
They are not aware of what's around them. People that are hypnotized are also in a way unconscious. They can be made to do all kinds of things they normally wouldn't do. When they come around, their consciousness is restored to them.

R.O.C. can come at you in all different ways. Might be on the computer. Some days we start by having you read something to make you think and answer. It's called a 'Conscious Reflection'. Here's an example:

When the rain falls, it don’t fall on one man’s house.
                                        -Lauryn Hill
Interpret this statement (What does it mean?)
Restate Ms. Hill’s observation in your own words.

Think you could handle that?

Another 'face' of R.O.C. is to have you come into a common place, usually our community room, to participate in a learning experience.

There are some powerful outside groups that come in to help us too.

One is called'Flood The Hood With Dreams'. Here is one the of the leaders of that group, check him out.
There's many other groups that come in too.

Also, sometimes we come together on our own to learn about things, or to sit in a circle, like our ancestors did, to talk and share.

Some things might seem a little uncomfortable at first. That's part of being 'unconscious'. We've been hypnotized into thinking that we are all alone and that we're not connected to each other. Time to wake up! Soon you'll find out how easy it is to open up and connect with your 'community'.

Sometimes R.O.C. is outside our walls. When was the last time your feet touched something other than a man-made surface?
When was the last time you were alone with nature... and your thoughts. You'd be surprised at what you hear.

The original Americans, the Native Americans, would go into the wilderness to find their life's calling, their 'dream-quest'. They recognized that nature is an older and more experienced teacher than any of us could ever be.

This part of R.O.C. is called 'Experiential' learning  -  learning by doing.
These aren't just field trips, they're high quality learning experiences.

Early humans had it much harder than us. No ipods, no microwaves, no internet.
They had to build a relationship with the natural world in order to survive.
This was good for them physically and spiritually.
It connected them to the 'source', and kept them 'awake'.

So are you up for it? Don't chicken out! You can do anything you set your mind to.

If you still think you might be interested then give us a call, or even better, stop by.

The man to talk to is our transition specialist Dr. Arrington. Tell him your story, and he'll tell you ours.

Together you can find out if there's an intersection where your life can cross ours.
