MPS Learning Targets
In 2003, Milwaukee Public Schools created Learning Targets for each subject area and grade level. These targets detail what is taught throughout the year. Parents are sent copies of the Learning Targets and encouraged to discuss them with teachers. Posters are also on display in the school. Teachers can provide samples of student work so that parents know what is expected from a child at his/her grade level. All schools in MPS work toward the same Learning Targets, which in turn are aligned with Wisconsin State Standards. Please click on the image below to download the Learning Targets brochures.

Science
At Trowbridge School, the outdoor science classroom and indoor science lab are used to explore, investigate, collect data and ask questions about the world around us. Through a sizable grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB), Trowbridge School constructed a Rain Garden that enriches learning experiences and provides students with hands-on educational experiences. Trowbridge School overlooks Lake Michigan, providing even more opportunities for exploration.

Reading
Through the Reading First Grant and Accelerated Reader technology program, Trowbridge students are able to extend their imaginations in the world of literature. Reading First provides students with a 90-minute reading block each day. Staff uses this time to focus students on the core reading program and to split into small, guided reading groups. The Accelerated Reader program promotes independent reading outside the classroom. It also equips parents with specific strategies geared toward their children’s reading needs and permits the Trowbridge staff to assess students on literature that engages them at a wide variety of reading levels. Portfolio collections provide classrooms with individual student work samples that celebrate proficiency achievements throughout the year.

Math
At Trowbridge, the staff teaches basic and necessary mathematics skills and concepts through discovery and technological approaches. Instructors align math strategies with individual student needs and support learning by assessing student achievements through the use of progress-monitoring tools. The accelerated math program allows students to engage in individualized Internet instruction that reinforces and enriches skills at each ability level.

Social Studies
Through community rich field trips, Trowbridge students gain knowledge and are provided with exposure to various ethnic and cultural groups. Partnerships with the First Stage Children’s Theater, Holiday Folk Fair, Irish Pen Pals and Theatrical Productions, ensure that students receive a well-rounded education. Students continue to participate in partnership activities that provide positive role models and new experiences with the Coast Guard and college-level students through Alverno and UW-Milwaukee. Discussions focused around age-appropriate current events increase understanding and diversity awareness.

Physical Education
At Trowbridge, staff embraces the important role that physical activity and healthy eating habits plays in the lives of students. Using new games and activities that focus on team sports, students learn to adopt healthy lifestyles. For the past two years, Trowbridge has been a recipient of the PEP Grant, giving students the opportunity to increase nutritional awareness and practice behavioral management skills. This balanced approach allows students to demonstrate a commitment to physical fitness, self-control and acceptance of others with different ability levels.
