| Get directions to Vieau here. | Extracurricular Activities/Community Learning Center At Vieau School, a wide variety of extracurricular activities are offered for students. Extracurricular activities allow students to expand their horizons, develop their talents and become well-rounded learners. These activities provide students with the skills needed to interact in a group setting, allowing them to work comfortably and confidently with their peers. Community Learning Center Our Community Learning Center (CLC) offers after-school academic help and enrichment. Students receive additional assistance with their homework and involve themselves in recreational activities.
Fine Arts Programs and Activities For students who want to focus on their fine arts skills, Vieau offers musical instrument lessons and opportunities to join dancing groups. By participating in a residency at The Skylight Opera, students may develop their musical talent, composition skills and stage presence. Currently, students may enhance their dance skills by joining the Vieau School Dancers, a group that focuses on folk-style dance and performs at various community events, such as Mexican Fiesta. Students may also participate in Ballroom and Tap Dancing. The Ballroom Dancers at Vieau have been featured in nationally recognized American Girl Magazine for their performance in the Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap competition. A variety of partnerships exist within the Vieau community that provide students with opportunities to develop their fine arts skills.
Technology The Vieau School staff realizes the importance of preparing students for a world that is become more and more globally connected through technology. A Computer Assisted Instruction Lab is available for Grades K5-5. Middle school students learn Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Lab. Vieau has a state-of-the-art Media Center offering an extensive collection of reading materials as well as computer access for all students. Third through eight grade classrooms have document camers and SMART BOARDS.
Athletics By joining a sports team at Vieau School, students stay physically fit. They also learn to cooperate with team members and work together to achieve a common goal. Students may join the following sports teams at Vieau:
Drug, Alcohol and Violence Prevention Programs Vieau School provides a variety of drug, alcohol and violence prevention programs that educate students on making safe and healthy choices. Specialty Programs Specialty programs at Vieau School allow our students to receive the extra attention they deserve in order to master their classroom skills. The following programs exist that students may increase their knowledge:
Goethel Library/Media Center All students, staff and families are encouraged to use the Goethel Library/Media Center to locate, gather and retrieve information. The library contains more than 13,000 items for check out, including more than 20 magazine titles, 1,000 videos and 10,000 books. Spanish language materials comprise more than 15% of the collection. The library includes an instructional area with seating for 36 individuals, a projection system with a document camera, a VCR/DVD player and a networked computer. The Lyles Story Corner is an additional instructional area for kindergarten and first grade students that includes risers and accommodates up to 30 students. The library has more than 15 networked computers for staff or student use. Other items include a laminator and an Ellison work station for cutouts. Crafts from all over the world decorate the library, which is named after Glenn Goethel, Media Specialist, Library Project Manager and volunteer at Vieau School for more than 20 years.
SPARK The SPARK Early Literacy Program brings literacy into all spheres of a child's life: home, community and school. It starts in classrooms throughout Milwaukee. Children in kindergarten through 3rd grade are selected by their teachers for the program. These children then participate in one-on-one instruction or small group tutoring sessions with an Early Literacy Instructor during the school day. |
