Spanish Immersion keeps all students active

At Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School (MSIS) Student Recess at Spanish Emmersionthey have created a set ofPBIS procedures during their recess time to ensure that all students are Safe, Responsible, and Respectful. Each month they create a set of 3 activities for the students at recess. Every student at MSIS is assigned a color each month. Every day at recess the colors are assigned an activity and all students assigned that color stay at that activity for the day. The next day each color is assigned to another activity. Each activity has a set of rules which are reviewed with the students, and each activity has a staff member assigned to actively supervise the students. You can view this process in action on our Youtube Channel here.

Forest Home Utilizes Student Monitors

Forest Home Student MonitorsAt the beginning of the school year, Forest Home’s PBIS team looked at data and saw that their area of focus needed to be the playground during recess times. They also noticed that these behaviors were spilling over into the classroom after recess. The team worked with their Assistant Principal, Mrs. Rodriguez Reed, and created more structure to their recess times with the students. They created a map of the playground, laying out which activities would be occurring in which areas of the playground. Specific staff members were also assigned to each area and given written instructions to help actively monitor the area. They also added student monitors from the older grades to each area. These students assisted the staff member in monitoring the area and participation in the activity with the students in that area. These student monitors were also given specific written instructions for their area. Forest Home was also able to use this role of recess monitor as an incentive for the students in the older grades to attain through their positive behaviors in the classroom. They are now focusing more directly on targeted grade level students who need tier 2 support and supplemental activities during these times in an effort to continue to drop their incident numbers.
