Here are the descriptions of the courses we feature in the Information Technology department:

Computer Information Technology
This introductory course exposes students to several aspects of computing, including Web page design and development by using the scripting languages, HTML and JavaScript, use and understanding of the Internet, e-mail and the World Wide Web, and use of office applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation tools. The course continually emphasizes and develops student employability skills using the SCANS model and gives students the opportunity to research information technology careers.

Web Design and Programming
Students incorporate principles of good Web design by studying design concepts and utilizing advanced HTML features, including tables, forms, and graphics. Advanced JavaScript programming language, including functions and rollovers, will be incorporated in a project-based curriculum. The course addresses career readiness and employability skills.

Web Database Design and SQL Programming
This class focuses on large-scale multi-user database management design using the Entity Relationship Model. Students program using SQL (Structured Query Language). The course introduces a smaller single-user database, the Unix operating system and a semester of Java programming.

Software Support
This course targets students who are interested in learning computer operations and software applications. Students learn how hardware and software components function, as well as the best, suggested practices in maintenance and safety issues. Through hands-on activities and labs, students learn to assemble and configure a computer, install operating systems and software and troubleshoot hardware and software problems. They will also apply keyboarding and word-processing skills and use database, spreadsheet and desktop presentation applications to manage and complete authentic, office-related tasks. The course addresses workplace employability skills.

AP Computer Science/Java Programming
The College Board Advanced Placement Program provides high school students with the opportunity to learn at the college level. AP Computer Science emphasizes object-oriented programming and methodology and address problem solving and algorithm development and analysis. In addition, the course includes an indepth study of data structures and abstraction. Students implement their work using Java and may qualify to take a national test in May, which could result in college credits and/or advanced standing at a number of universities.

Advanced Word Processing
Students are exposed to more advanced word processing skills and continue to improve their keyboarding skills. They study mail merging, advanced tables, desktop publishing, and word processing for research reports. The course uses Microsoft Word from Office XP as the current application. Students learn more advanced spreadsheet applications following a review of basic skills they have learned previously. The course uses Microsoft Excel from Office XP as the current application. Using computer-modeling software, students learn the design process. They solve design problems as they develop, create and analyze product models.
