Does Summer School Help Test Scores?
It is statistically difficult to measure accurately the achievement of children in a brief four-six week period. However, consider the following:
-A few summers ago, Limited English (ESL)
summer school students gained six months growth in
vocabulary, when compared with ESL students who did not attend summer school.
-Children who attended our summer school
program from kindergarten-Grade 5 were in the classroom180 extra days (one full year).
-a few years ago our bilingual grade 4 children had the
highest Spanish proficient reading 78%and language 67% scores of all MPS bilingual
schools. We are proud of this achievement by our bilingual students and their teachers.
